Alvin Asa Bates, age 77, of Silver Valley, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at his residence, with his family by his side. Graveside funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 23 at the Silver Valley Cemetery Pavilion with Hubert Rutherford officiating. Interment will follow in the Silver Valley Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Alvin was born February 9, 1936 in Silver Valley, a son of J. C. "Charley" Bates and Davette Wilson Bates. He grew up in Silver Valley, attended school there and graduated from Novice High School. Alvin served his country in the United States Army. He drove a truck for over 30 years for Merchant Motor Lines.
On March 17, 1989 he married Patricia Childers in Abilene, Texas. He was a member of Silver Valley Community Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Silver Valley; one son, Maury Bates of Goldsboro; three daughters, Misty Davis and husband Chris of Aledo, Cheryl Huddle and husband Bobby of Silver Valley and Joy Toothaker of Novice; six grandchildren, Marcus Christensen, Malia Bates, Katie Davis, Pierson Davis, Trinity Toothaker and Kaylee Toothaker; three sisters, Lucille Day of Lake Brownwood, Minnie Chamblin of Odessa and Charlene Cole of Gouldbusk; one brother, Jim Bates of Dallas; many nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Raymond Bates and David Lee Bates and a sister, Mary Frances Jones.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas.
