Barbara (Watson) Young

Barbara Young, age 86, of Coleman, died Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest in Fort Worth.

Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2023, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Martin, pulpit minister at the Church of Christ in Winters, officiating.  A private interment will be in the Burkett Cemetery.  The family will greet friends after the service.  Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

She was born Barbara Watson on January 9, 1937, in Santa Anna to William Thomas Watson and Opal Townsley Watson.  She grew up in Novice and graduated from Novice High School.  Barbara attended and graduated from the American Business Institute in Fort Worth.  She married Claude Freeman on July 4, 1957, in Novice.  He preceded her in death on January 22, 1991.  Barbara then married Andy Young on September 23, 1992, in Johnson City.  Andy preceded her in death on December 28, 2020.

Barbara was a bookkeeper for several businesses in Coleman until 1976 when she became the Coleman County Treasurer.  She kept this position until her retirement in 1995.  Barbara was a member of the Coleman County Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, Coleman Senior Center, a volunteer for Loaves and Fishes, and was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ.  Barbara always said that the most important job she ever had was raising her son and spending time with her grandson.

Barbara is survived by her son, Michael Freeman of Keene; one grandson, Austin Freeman of Keene; two stepsons, James D. Young and Robert M. Young; one brother, Don Watson of Tuscola; and multiple nieces and nephews who she loved like her own children.
