Barney Ransberger, 86, of Coleman, died Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, with Rev. Richard Hetzel officiating. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Barney Ransberger was born November 3, 1930 in Coleman County to Paul and Mattie Chapman Ransberger. He attended school in Coleman and graduated from Bayou School in Coleman County. He married Sylbia Bowers on May 20, 1954 in Coleman. Barney operated a filling station before joining the Army National Guard of Texas in 1960, retiring after 43 years of service as Command Sargent Major. He taught training exercises all over Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Barney was an avid sports fan all through his life. He was a long-time member of the Coleman Little League Association, the Coleman Softball Association, played on the men’s Volley Ball team and was the coach of the Styx softball team. Barney also loved to hunt and fish and was a 4-H Leader, teaching wood crafts. Barney was a member of the Heart of Texas Old Guard Bunch and the Men’s Downtown Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife, Sylbia Ransberger of Coleman; two sons, Bruce Ransberger and wife, Ginger, of Coleman, Barry Ransberger of Coleman; one daughter, Sue Ransberger of Coleman; four grandchildren, Cody Ransberger and wife, Diana, of Abilene, Lance Gandy and wife, Kellyn of Montgomery, Chad Ransberger and his mother, Nellie Perkins, of Coleman, Brooke Norris and husband, Cameron of Coleman and 10 great grandchildren. Barney is also survived by nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Winston Polley and Barney’s lap buddy, Kramer.
Besides his parents, Barney was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2017 at Stevens Funeral Home.
Donations in memory of Barney may be made to the Men’s Downtown Sunday School Class or the Heart of Texas Old Guard Bunch.
