Bertha P. (Guynes) Tyson

Midland

Bertha Petunia Tyson, age 83, passed to the arms of our Jesus on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Midland Memorial Hospital.

Family and friends are invited to a graveside funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

She was born Bertha Petunia Guynes on April 28, 1939, in Rising Star, Texas to Johnie Herman Guynes and Bertha Jewel Buchanan Guynes. Bertha grew up in Denver City, Texas. She graduated from Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas and obtained a degree in vocational nursing. Bertha worked as an L.V.N. at Brownwood Regional Medial Center and Brownwood Nursing and Rehabilitation. She then moved to San Angelo where she worked at Carlsbad State Hospital until her retirement. Bertha loved to play bingo and was known as the “bingo queen.”  She also enjoyed collecting toys from McDonalds, butterflies, and loved to wear hats for special occasions.

Bertha loved her family with all her heart. It brought her immense pleasure to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and will be missed by all who knew her.

Preceding Bertha in death are her parents, Johnie H. and Bertha J. Guynes; her stepmother, Opal Guynes-Morris; her daughter, Resa Miller; her brother, Johnny H. Guynes, Jr.; two sisters, Fayrene Hendricks  and Marcene Crunk; one granddaughter, Brandy Elliott; and one grandson, Jason Merryman.

She is survived by one son, Arlan Hollingsworth of Midland; two daughters, Torla Wilder and husband Robert Wilder of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and Twana Mejia of Midland; one brother, Otis Holsenbeck and wife Frances of Brownwood; and one sister, Vela Becker of Nacogdoches; ten grandchildren, Amanda Brewer and husband Scott of Keller, Cole Cousins of Houston, Anthony Hollingsworth of San Angelo, Leyla Hollingsworth of Humble, Shane Merryman and wife Amanda of Kansas City, Missouri, Amber McKinley and husband Jayton of Coleman, Ricky Wilder of Honolulu, Hawaii, Randy Wilder of Odessa, Eddie Mejia, Jr. and wife Rosie of Midland, Lindy Hollingsworth and fiancée James of Midland, Brooke Baxter of Duncan, Oklahoma, and Daniel Baxter and wife Liz of Duncan, Oklahoma; and 18 great-grandchildren.
