Darrell Garner

Darrell Eugene Garner, age 80, former Coleman resident, died March 30, 2015 in Florida. He was born October 31, 1934 in Doole, Texas, a son of James and Gladys Garner.

After growing up in and around Coleman, Darrell joined the Texas National Guard and then the United States Army. He was stationed in Italy for three years and two three year tours in Germany. He was then stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma where his four children attended and graduated high school. During this period he served in Viet Nam and Korea. Darrell took his last command at Fort Stewart, Georgia, ending his nearly three decades of service to this country. He and Becky then moved to Florida where he worked for Martin-Marietta and ultimately retired. They established a new home and circle of friends there and he will be dearly missed by his Florida family.

He married Rebecca LaVon Blaylock on December 31, 1952.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Stephen and wife Ilia, Cindy and husband Mike, Richard and wife Chris and Terri; seven grandchildren, Eric Garner and wife Jennifer, Lauren Garcia and husband Lester, Luke Noland, Savannah Heidloff and husband David, Russell Noland, Alex Zacco, Shannon Zacco; four great-grandchildren, Hudson Garner, Maxwell Garner, Reese Garner and Logan Heidloff. He is also survived by a brother Larry and sisters Avell and Sandra.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gladys Garner, brothers, Bill, Jim and Garland.

A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6 in the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman, with Rev. Brad Slaten, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Inurnment will follow in the family plot in Coleman Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
