Derald D. Burns, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and esteemed veteran, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, in Coleman, Texas. Born on December 21, 1941, in Bristow, Creek County, Oklahoma, Derald lived a life marked by bravery, service, and love.

Following his honorable service in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in combat and awarded two Purple Heart medals, Derald carried the legacy of a proud veteran throughout his life. He also received commendations including the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with bronze star, and the Infantry Combat Badge. After his military service, he dedicated his career as an Engineering Technician for the Railroad Commission of Texas, applying his skills and knowledge diligently in public service.

On August 17, 1977, Derald married the love of his life, Sandra Lynn Lanham, in Coleman. Their marriage flourished for 47 years, embodying a partnership built on mutual respect, love, and unwavering support. Together, they faced the uncertainties of life.

He was a devoted member and servant of the North Coleman Baptist Church, where for many years he served as a Deacon. His Christian faith was a guiding force in his life, inspiring him to provide support to those around him. Additionally, he was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans, serving as treasurer and contributing to the welfare of fellow veterans.

Despite the physical health challenges he faced from his injuries he received in combat, he approached life with resilience and positivity, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. His struggles do not define him, but rather his accomplishments and the love he freely gave to his family and community stand as the testament to his character.

Derald is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Burns; his children, Robert Wayne Burns, Latricia Ann Burns, Derald Dwayne Burns, and stepson, Michael Horn; four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren; along with his sisters, Martha Stanton and Judy Burns. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Charlie, James, John, Leroy and his twin brother Gerald, sister, Geraldine Herron, and his stepson, Darrell Horn.

A funeral service to honor Derald D. Burns will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, located at 400 W Pecan St, Coleman, Teas. Following the service, interment with military honors, will take place at Coleman City Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home.

Derald’s legacy of courage, faith, and family will endure in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
