Edwin Maurice Whittington, 90, of Coleman, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at his residence. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, with Sam Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Glen Cove Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mr. Whittington was born December 16, 1924 in Glen Cove to Marion Dewey Whittington and Lizzie May Jones Whittington. He graduated from Centennial High School in 1942. He attended John Tarleton College and graduated from Texas A&M in 1950. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Okinawa and Saipan in 1944. On December 20, 1944, he married Ruth Davidson in Coleman.
Mr. Whittington taught at the Veteran's School in Gates and Haskell. He also worked for the Soil Conservation Service with the USDA from 1952 to 1977. Following his retirement in 1977, Mr. Whittington moved back to Coleman from Giddings, to live on the family homestead.
His wife, Ruth, preceded him in death on March 13, 2007. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles Whittington and a granddaughter.
In 2008, Mr. Whittington married Delores Burch in Coleman.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Whittington of Coleman; two daughters, Glenda Friedrich and husband, Floyd, pf Lincoln, Norma Walch and husband, Dennis, of Cypress; one son, Gary Whittington and wife Sheila, of Hockley; one sister, Peggy Smith of Coleman; one aunt, Allene Gallaway of Coleman; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.
Visitation will from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2015 at the funeral home.
