Effie Mae Shelfer, 92, of Coleman, died Monday, July 29, 2019 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. There will be a visitation on Thursday, August 1, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Mr. Bob Martin, minister of the Elm Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Effie Mae Gist on October 25, 1926 in Colorado City to Herman C. Gist and Peggy Foster Gist. She grew up in Flower Grove, in Martin County, and graduated from high school there in 1943. She attended Abilene Christian University for several years. On December 12, 1946, she married Lorin C. Shelfer in Sweetwater. He preceded her in death on August 11, 1990. Mrs. Shelfer worked for an oil supply company owned by Red Coppedge in Lovington, New Mexico. She also worked as a secretary for the Church of Christ in Hutchinson, Kansas, worked in the Public Relations Department at Abilene Christian University for 15 years and worked the bookkeeping department at Coleman County State Bank for 20 years.
Survivors include one son, Douglas Shelfer and wife, Annette, of Arlington; two grandchildren, Michelle Anderson of Cleburne, Amber Shelfer of Lubbock; one great grandchild, Sydney Anderson of Dallas and daughter-in-law, Denise Shelfer of Abilene. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Shelfer; one brother, James Gist and one sister, Della Ruth Beckham.
