Ellen Jo Johnson, age 78, of Novice, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 in Abilene. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at the First Baptist Church 200 E. College Ave., in Coleman, with Rev. Daniel Stovall officiating, assisted by Dr. Chas Shira. Burial will follow in the Midway Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.
She was born Ellen Jo Coats on October 3, 1939 in Winters, Texas to Leroy Coats and Gerry Richards Coats. She grew up in Runnels and Coleman County and attended school at Novice. Ellen Jo married Richard Johnson on January 12, 1957 in Abilene. In 1984 together they purchased what is now Johnson Feed Barn in Coleman, which continues to be a family owned and operated business. Ellen Jo loved fishing and could fish from sun up to sun down. She loved to travel. Every year since 1976, she and Richard would travel down to South Padre Island and spend several weeks. She also enjoyed traveling to Ruidoso, NM. Ellen Jo was a housewife, and she loved to feed the birds and hummingbirds. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was always loving and supportive of her family and she will be deeply missed.
Ellen Jo is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Troy Coats and Roy Coats and wife Diane; and great-grandson, Stockton Ray Shorb.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Johnson of Novice; one daughter, Renea McMillan and husband Brent of Coleman; two granddaughters, Brittni Kaczyk and husband Josh of San Angelo, and Whitney Shorb and husband Matt of San Angelo; two great-grandchildren, Breanna Kaczyk and Heston Shorb of San Angelo; nieces Sequoyah Bussiere and husband T.J. and Michelle Dinger; nephew Jake Moody; and great niece, Sienna Shoars; multiple cousins and close friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, April 23, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.
Memorials are suggested in memory of Ellen Jo to the Coleman County Youth Foundation, Hendrick Hospice, or to a charity of your choice.
