Era Mae, also referred to as Aunt Mazie, Jackie and Era, was born to Charles Aaron Smith and Flora Alberta Wilson Smith on September 3, 1925 in Coleman. She grew up and attended school in Coleman. She worked at an aircraft factory in Fort Worth and for Ryan Aircraft in San Diego, California. She also worked for a nursing service in California, sitting with the elderly in their home. In her adult life, she traveled back and forth to California, which she dearly loved. She married the long-time friend and love of her live, Otto Lee Trittipo on September 3, 1989 in El Cajon, California. She loved California and made it her permanent home after she and Otto married. After his death in December of 2010, she moved back to Coleman to be near family.
Beyond family and family time, Era Mae loved life, her church, traveling and music. She was blessed with the love for taking care of people: her mom and dad, her brother, her cousins and friends. While living in California, she and Otto visited with many elderly shut-in church members and those in the hospital. In her early days, Era Mae was quite a match maker for several couples. She always had several dogs at a time, treating them like her babies and feeding them way too much. Her nieces and nephews remember fun visits with Aunt Era Mae as he shared her beautiful lipsticks, boots and shiny jewelry and taught us all to drive much too young. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing.
Besides her parents and her husband, Era Mae is preceded in death by one brother, Vernon G. Smith.
Era Mae is survived by one brother, Roy C. Smith of Coleman; nieces and nephews, Glenda Adams, Carol Bozeman, Bobby Smith, Sue Tune, C.W. Smith, Janet Cree, Ernest Keith Peach and numerous great nieces and great nephews and special friends, all of which she dearly loved and treasured. She will truly be missed and in our hearts forever.
Memorials in memory of Era Mae can sent to the Elm Street Church of Christ Building Fund or Holiday Hill Nursing Home.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday at Stevens Funeral Home.
