Fred Wayne Phillips, Sr., 88, of Houston, passed away on January 18, 2018 at his residence. A graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Greenleaf Cemetery, 2615 U.S. Highway 377 in Brownwood. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Fred was born in Echo in Coleman County, on December 29, 1929 to Lee Elmer Phillips and Mayme Elva Harrell Phillips. Fred grew up in Quinlan in Hunt County and attended school there. He then moved with his family to Coleman County, where he graduated from Centennial High School in 1947. He married Nelda Jean Sikes on June 16, 1969 in Odessa and was married for 39 years until her death on September 17, 2007. Fred worked for the United States Postal Service. He later became self-employed with Texaco, operating a service station. Fred also owned and operated Phillips Wrecker Service in Houston and Odessa for over 60 years, as well as Phillips Insurance Company and P.J.’s Fashions. Fred was a life-long member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Second Baptist Church in Houston, where he also served as a Deacon.
Left to cherish his memory include his step-son, Tommy Sikes and wife, Donna, of Brownwood; one son, Fred Phillips, Jr. and wife, Pam, of Odessa; three sisters-in-law, Nina Lee Phillips of Dallas, Katie Phillips of Coleman, Martha Phillips of Henderson; seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda; one son, Michael Lee Phillips; one daughter, Brenda Kay Farmer; four brothers, Lee Phillips, Harold
Phillips, Odell Phillips, Bob Phillips; two sisters, Elva Marie Phillips, Ruth Wade; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
There will be a visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2017 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.
