Gussie Jennings

Gussie Jennings, age 90, of Coleman, died Wednesday, March 4, 2015 in Sweetwater Care Center. Funeral service will be held 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charly McDermett officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born on December 4, 1924 in Coleman, a daughter of George E. Sparkman and Pearl Churchill Sparkman. She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School, Class of 1942. Following high school, she attended and graduated from Texas A & I University (now Texas A & M University - Kingsville). She later received her Master's degree from Abilene Christian University in Abilene. In 1945 she married Arthur Vollie Jennings, Sr. in Abilene and he preceded her in death on November 4, 2004.

Mrs. Jennings was an elementary school teacher for many years and taught in several school districts, including Novice and Talpa in Coleman County. She later taught in the Abilene ISD and retired from that district. She was a member of First Baptist in Coleman and also attended Abilene Bible Church. She and her husband were active in The Gideons International and the Good Sam's Club in Abilene. Mrs. Jennings was a life-time board member of the Mt. View Cemetery Association. She was also a member of the Circle C Cattlewomen and Farm Bureau.

Survivors include four sons, Arthur Vollie Jennings, Jr. of Kermit, Galan Jennings and wife Jerri Lou of Kermit, Rodney Jennings and wife Nancy of Clyde, Tommy Jennings and wife Lavonia of Rotan; six grandchildren, Jerry Lynn Emanuel, Jamie Kaye Pack, John Wesley Jennings, Stacy Jennings, Royce Jennings, Thomas Coby Jennings; nine great-grandchildren, John Emanuel, Aaron Pack, Aerial Pack, Zachary Tanner Jennings, Haden Witt Jennings, Whitney Raye Jennings, Scarlett Jennings, Andrew Thomas Jennings, Hannah Elizabeth Jennings.

Mrs. Jennings was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, and husband.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.
