Harold Wayne McClure

Harold Wayne McClure, age 87, of Coleman, died Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Coleman County Medical Center.

The family will host a visitation at 2:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2021, at Concho Street Baptist Church, 1700 South Concho Street, in Coleman with Rev. Aaron Mitchell officiating.  Interment will follow with military honors in the Talpa Cemetery.  Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

Wayne was born June 22, 1934, in Santa Anna, Texas to Charles Boyd McClure and Stella Herring McClure.  He grew up in Talpa and graduated from Talpa High School in 1952.  Wayne attended San Angelo Jr. College and then graduated from Texas Tech University in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Husbandry.  Wayne entered the United States Army in 1957 and proudly served his country until he received an honorable discharge in 1959, being stationed in Fort Bliss and Fort Hood.  He served in the 16th Calvary.  Following discharge from the service, Wayne worked at the Machlin Feed Yard as a pen rider in Walnut, California. After returning to Texas, Wayne worked as a herdsman and ranch hand at the Horne-Huckabee Ranch.  Wayne married Betty Dixon of Ballinger on June 15, 1961, in Walnut, California. Wayne took a job in the bookkeeping department at the First Coleman National Bank in 1968, working his way up to a loan officer.  He later became a founding member and director of Coleman County State Bank, serving as president.

Wayne was a very active participant in the Coleman community.  He was a member of the Evening Lions Club and served as president for two years.  Wayne served as president and director at the West Texas Boys Ranch where he helped sponsor the deer hunt at Hords Creek for the young men of Coleman County.  Wayne also served as president and sales chairman for the Coleman County Livestock Show where he was able to make loans to many of the kids to purchase show animals.  He taught the seventh and eighth grade boys Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church in Coleman for several years and he always said that God blessed him for being able to do this.

Wayne was a true cowboy at heart.  He loved the cowboy life and being around his horses.  He was a member of the San Angelo State Rodeo Team, the Texas Tech Rodeo Association, the Coleman Rodeo Association for over 50 years where he served as past president; Wayne also served as vice-president to the Coleman Jr. Rodeo Association and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association.  He was a gold card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.  Back in the day, Wayne was also a member of the Coleman Breeder/Feeder organization.

Wayne loved the Lord and served Him with all his heart.  He was a past president at the Men’s Downtown Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Concho Baptist Church in Coleman.  Wayne would say, “Sit on your horse and look over the country and tell me there is no God.”  He saw the good in every man and was willing to help those in need.  In his later years, Wayne became active as an auction helper for the West Texas Rehabilitation Round up.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Boyd and Stella McClure, and two brothers, Dayton McClure and Frank McClure.

He is survived by his wife, Betty McClure of Coleman; two sons, Travis Wayne McClure and wife Liz of Abilene, and Dee Boyd McClure of Tolar; and five grandchildren, Lauren, Luke, Cody, John, and Ty.

Pallbearers will be Ben Scott, Jack Horne, Patrick Justiss, Josh Hale, Chris Jamison, Keith Phillips, and Reave Scott.  Honorary pallbearers will be John Hanna and James Nall.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Texas Oncology for the wonderful care that was given to Wayne.

As we say good-bye to our husband, father, friend, and colleague, we tip our hats and say job well done.
