James A. Baker, Jr.

October 28, 1922 — May 13, 2018

James A. Baker, Jr., 95, of Brownwood, died Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Waco.  There will be a visitation from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will be in the Burkett Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.  Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

James A. Baker, Jr. was born October 28, 1922 in Burkett to James A. Baker and Lillie Cason Baker.  He grew up in Burkett and attended school at Rae and Burkett.  He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945.   On November 14, 1944, he married Madie LaVerne Row in Coleman.  After being honorably discharged from the Navy, James and Laverne lived in Coleman for a short time then moved to El Paso for 18 years, before moving to Brownwood in 1972.  He worked as a welder for the Civil Service, was a member of Coleman Masonic Lodge #496 for over 70 years, member of the Scottish Rite and was of the Baptist faith.  James devoted his life to his family.  He attended every school activity he could, whether it was his children’s, grandchildren’s or great-grandchildren’s.  He loved tinkering in his shop and raising chickens.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Marie Bond of Brookesmith; four sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Pat Baker of Comanche, David and Penny Baker of Gustine, Tommy and Antoinette Baker of Lubbock, James and Debbie Baker of Cisco; one sister, Madie Burton of Round Rock; two brothers, Bob Baker of Brownwood, Ed Baker of Brownwood; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Laverne, on December 12, 2016 and 14 brothers and sisters.
