James Mark Thompson

February 2, 1925 — August 24, 2016

James Mark Thompson, 91, of Talpa, died Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Coleman County Medical Center. Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Talpa Cemetery with Rev. Benny Allcorn officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

James Mark Thompson was born February 2, 1925 in Talpa to the late Johnnie Ruth West Thompson and John Mark Thompson. He grew in Talpa and graduated from Talpa High School. James then attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville and engineering school at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Japan as an Army Engineer during World War II.

After returning from the war, James helped his father with Thompson's Garage, the family business in Talpa. He married Glenda Beth Seals, of Coleman, on November 1, 1951 and they had one daughter, Sherrie. They later separated. James started farming and ranching, while continuing to work at the garage. He spent many happy years shepherding his sheep, goats and cows. One of his greatest loves was collecting antiques and books.

On June 21, 1969, James married Ada Brown of Ballinger. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger. James also worked for over 30 years on the Talpa Cemetery Association and caring for the grounds. He was also a member of the Coleman Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.

James is survived by his daughter, Sherrie Love and husband, Clay, of Talpa; one grandson, Cole Mark Love of Talpa; one sister-in-law, Louise Thompson of Talpa; three nieces, Linda Hallford of Talpa, Katherine Handy of Joshua, Teri White of Coahoma and numerous cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Brown Thompson; Sherrie's mother, Glenda Seal Hollabaugh; his brother, J.T. Thompson.

Memorial donations in memory of James may be made to your favorite charity.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.
