LaVerne Weatherred, age 84, of Coleman, Texas, passed from this life on Monday, March 19, 2018, at Coleman County Medical Center. Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Ronnie Lane officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. There will be a visitation on Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman.
She was born Melba LaVerne Harrison on June 12, 1933 in Guion, Texas to John Loyd and Lula Williams Harrison. She graduated from South Taylor High School and Hardin-Simmons College (now University). On October 29, 1960, she married Sumter Weatherred at Ovalo Baptist Church. She worked for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service for over 30 years until retiring. She then worked for several years at J. E. Stevens in the housewares department. She enjoyed working with Sumter in the family farming and ranching operation and was a big supporter of the 4-H program and loved working with John Mark in his lamb and horse showing as a youth.
She is survived by her husband, Sumter, of Coleman; son, John Mark, of Keller; sister, Carole Burroughs of Coleman; sisters-in-law, Helen Cross of Coleman and Mary Louise McMahan (husband Joe) of Commerce, Texas; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
