Lester "Leck" Matthews, 87, of Coleman, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Coleman Healthcare Center. Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Lester "Leck" Matthews was born October 2, 1925 in Leaday, to Joe Matthews and Vivian Cohea Matthews. Leck grew up and attended school at Leaday and served in the United States Army during the European Theatre of Operations. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Leck married Doris Rozzell on October 8, 1947. Leck worked as a ranch foreman and looked after the needs of others. He was also a member of Leaday Baptist Church.
Survivors include four children, Linda Halfmann of Coahoma, Lexia Bagley of Cross Plains, Lorri Thweatt of Coleman, Lester Matthews of Abilene; one brother, Willie Matthews of Coleman; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris in 2009; a brother, Carl Matthews; a sister, Ruth Row and a granddaughter, Cassi Farrow.
Family visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, September 16, 2013 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.
Memorials may be made to the Coleman Meals on Wheels.
