Lucille Hunter

October 7, 1920 — February 23, 2018

Lucille Hunter, age 97, of Coleman, died Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Coleman County Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the Coleman Cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Wayne Lewis, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

She was born Alice Lucille Davis on October 7, 1920 to Creed Davis and Lucy Chapple Davis in Richmond, Virginia. Lucille graduated high school in Richmond and later attended Ohio State University. In 1942 she entered the United States Naval Reserve, better known as the WAVES for the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. During this time, Lucille was in charge of finding aircraft parts for the aircraft carriers on Ford Island. She had the highest percentage finding rate of anyone. She received the American Campaign Medal, Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. It was also during this time that she met and married James F. Hunter on December 3, 1945 in Pearl City, Oahu, Hawaii. Lucille and James settled in Coleman in 1964 where she was a bookkeeper at Stemple Manufacturing. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coleman, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Lucille is preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, and one sister.

She is survived by one son, James “Jimmy” Hunter and wife Ginger of Abilene; one grandson, Scott Hunter and wife Kristen of Lubbock; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Hunter and Ryan Hunter of Lubbock; and one sister, Phyllis Whitaker of Richmond, Virginia.

Visitation for family and friends will be 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street in Coleman. The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 1:45 p.m. to go to the Coleman Cemetery.
