Lula Mae "Granny" Mills

April 10, 1911 — August 2, 2013

Lula "Granny" Mills, 102, of Coleman died Friday, August 2, 2013 at her residence. Graveside funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Pastor Darrell Brown officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Lula "Granny" Mills was born April 10, 1911 in Rockwall County, Texas, the daughter of James Cornelius Gilliam and Dorah Blue Gilliam. She moved to Coleman County at a young age and attended school in the Buffalo Community. She married John Thomas Mills on March 31, 1928 in a horse and buggy at Dyers Crossing on Hord's Creek because the water was too high for them to cross. John Thomas preceded her in death in 1958. Granny Mills worked as a cook for over 40 years at the Dixie Pig and the Tradewinds Restraunts. She was well known for homemade pies. She gave a strong Christian influence to her family and was a member of North Coleman Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Lena B. Smith of San Angelo; one daughter, Tommie Sue Brooks and husband, Tommy, of Coleman; one son, Jesse Mills, Sr. of Coleman, 13 grandchildren, Nita Williams of Coleman, Johnny Dempsey of Coleman, Rusty Mills of Coleman, Lori Duquette of Coleman, Debbie Burdick of Coleman, Morris Brooks of Coleman, Rhonda Capps of Pontotoc, Billy Brooks of Coleman, Jesse Mills, Jr., of Coleman, Trina Whinery of Brownwood, Tammy Arreola of Brownwood, Jessica Mills of Coleman, Andrea Mills of Coleman; 33 great grandchildren, 18 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Patsy June Dempsey; one son, Bobbie Glen Mills; one great grandson, Rocky Whinery, II; five brothers, Bonnie Gilliam, Connie Gilliam, Grady Gilliam, Gerome Gilliam, Claude Gilliam; three sisters, Cora Gilliam Smith, Novie Gilliam Seals, Sybil Gilliam Nichols; one daughter-in-law, Wilma Mills.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman.
