Madie Opal Hester, 91, died Friday, August 2, 2013 at her residence. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Brown Ranch Cemetery Pavilion. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Madie Opal Hester was born August 2, 1922 in Silver Valley, the daughter of Charles Oudes Morgan, Sr. and Ida Jewel Thompson Morgan. She grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1940. She owned the Little Bear Grocery Store in Coleman for many years. She married Walter C. Hester on February 15, 1975. Following their marriage, Madie and Walter moved to Angleton. In 2002, they moved back to Coleman. Madie loved sports, whether it was the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks or the Texas Rangers. This past July, she went with her son and granddaughter to see the Texas Rangers play in Arlington. She was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Smith of Santa Anna, Rickey Smith of Memphis; six grandchildren, Christy Ellis of Brownwood, Jason Smith of Memphis, Jeffrey Smith of Lubbock, Chad Smith of Lubbock, Heather Smith of San Angelo, Shana Bui of Virginia; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Marie Stevens and husband, Cliff, of Coleman; two brothers-in-law, Truman Smith of Red Oak, Kenneth Smith of Valera; step-daughter, Charlene Ware of San Marcos and her special care-giver, an angel sent by God, Sandra McWhirter of Coleman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, on November 8, 2002; one brother, C.O. Morgan, Jr. and an infant daughter, Linda JoAnn Smith.
