October 9, 1931 — November 18, 2019

Coleman

Mary Joyce Barnett Bishop passed from this earth, on Monday, November 18, 2019, at the age of 88 years old.    Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 21, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman.    Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Chad Barnett, officiating.

She was born on October 9, 1931 in Rockwood, Texas, the baby of the family of seven siblings, to Lonzo McMann Barnett and Melissa Elizabeth (Bessie) Lawrence Barnett.  She grew up in various places in Texas, attending school in Bend and high school in Coleman.  On December 25, 1949, she married O. D. Bishop in Santa Anna and he preceded her in death on February 13, 1979.  Joyce worked in the sewing factory in Brownwood for several years as well being a homemaker and mother.  She always enjoyed working in her yard and grew beautiful flowers.  Several times she won “Yard of the Month” while living in Brownwood and also in Aransas Pass. She made her botanical dream a reality by planting all kinds of flowers everywhere she lived.  She loved to go exploring, looking for rocks and wildflowers.  Joyce loved working jigsaw puzzles, playing dominoes and other games,  always with a lot of laughter.  She also like to crochet.  She enjoyed and loved her family and they will deeply miss her.

She is survived by her four children, Nickey Dean Bishop of Austin, James Gayland Bishop of Cayuga, Melissa Elizabeth Phillips of Mathis, Henry Willis Bishop and wife Lavada of Poteet; seven grandchildren, Jamie Lee Belz and husband David of Abilene, Jeana Farrow and husband Jake of Coleman, Rachel Glaze of Copperas Cove, Lora White of New Braunfels, Letitia Lara and husband Marc of Sandia, Ashleah Pawlik and husband James of Covington, Louisiana, Bishop Morgan and wife Nicole of Mathis; 21 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.  A special thank you to Casey Barnett Lobstein, her favorite (shhh, don’t tell the others.)

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Claude and wife Elda Barnett, Pete Barnett, Oscar (Dub) and Wanda Barnett, Lonzo (Duke) Barnett,; two sisters,  Alta and husband Cecil Nicholson, Lola and husband Garland Daylong.

Mary Joyce Barnett Bishop loved flowers but if you would rather make a memorial in her memory, the family asks that you consider Holiday Hill Nursing Home, where Joyce happily resided for the last several years.  The family so appreciates all of the love, care and concern given to her by the employees of Holiday Hill.
