Merle McClellan, 96, of Coleman died January 13, 2014 at Coleman Healthcare Center. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the United Christian and Presbyterian Church, 1609 South Commercial Avenue, Coleman, with Bo Whitaker officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born on March 3, 1917 in Toyah, Texas to Denis "Big Pat the Irishman" and Ada Moran. Her mother died when she was three years old and she lived with her grandmother. At the age of fifteen, Merle come to Coleman to live with her older sister's family. She was introduced to her future husband, Clyde McClellan, by her sister. Merle and Clyde married in 1934.
Merle and Clyde loved golf and enjoyed going out to the Coleman Country Club to visit with friends. She was involved in many service projects through the Kiwanis Club and volunteered with the Coleman County Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. She taught Sunday School for over 35 years, was President of the Woman's group for several years and was a valuable asset helping the architect design the First Christian Church, now known as the United Christian and Presbyterian Church, where she has been a member for over 78 years. For 25 years, Merle volunteered with Meals On Wheels for the Coleman Senior Center and was named Citizen of the Year in 2011.
Survivors include one son, Timothy McClellan of Abilene and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde McClellan on January 12, 1982; two sisters and one brother.
