Mildred Calk, 97, of Coleman, died Monday, May 2, 2016 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, with Rev. Daniel Stovall officiating. Burial will follow in the Silver Valley Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Mildred Georgia Brisbon on June 28, 1918 in Brown County to Fletcher Brisbon and Amelia Knebel Brisbon. She grew up in Houston, Jones County, Taylor County and Brown County. She graduated from May High School in 1935. On February 28, 1937, she married Oliver Wayne Calk in Coleman. He preceded her in death on April 20, 1989. Mrs. Calk worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital, now Coleman County Medical Center, for over 34 years. She was a founding member of the Silver Valley Cemetery Association, a member of the Home Demonstration Club, was Coleman County Rural Citizen of the Year in 1999 and has been a faithful member of Concho Baptist Church since 1962.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Anita Calk of Coleman; one son-in-law, Jake Dennis of Coleman, two grandchildren, Howard Dennis of Coleman, Sylvia Clawson of Coleman; two step-grandchildren, John Cash of Lawn, Jennifer Jones, of Denver, Colorado, five great grandchildren, Cynthia, Samantha, Brianna, Ted and Becca; two great-great grandchildren, Mikayla and Joshua; five step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Calk was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patsy Dennis, and two brothers.
The family has requested memorial donations be made to the Silver Valley Cemetery Association or Concho Baptist Church.
Visitation with the family will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Stevens Funeral Home.
