Nancy Adian Cavanaugh, 80, of Coleman died Monday, April 25, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Nancy Jo Adian on December 16, 1935 in Coleman to Reuben S. Adian and Lena Mae Miller Adian. She grew up in Fisk and attended school at Fisk and graduated from Mozelle High School in 1954 as the Valedictorian of her class. On September 3, 1955, she married Jackie Cavanaugh at First Baptist Church in Coleman. Mrs. Cavanaugh attended Texas Tech University for a year and graduated from Hardin-Simmons University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1970. She received her teaching certification from Texas A & M.
Mrs. Cavanaugh taught kindergarten and first grade for 34 years, teaching at Coleman, Mozelle and Panther Creek schools. Mrs. Cavanaugh was always teaching, even during the summer when school was not in session. Her passion was teaching children to read. That was very important to her. She was a charter member of the Good Neighbor Club, member of the 4-H Club and attended the National 4-H Congress in Chicago, where she won several scholarships. She was also a member of Retired Teachers and a member of Harmony Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jackie Cavanaugh; three children, Kevin Cavanaugh, Kirk Cavanaugh and wife, Lisa, Kayla Cavanaugh Wallace and Raymond Moreno; daughter-in-law, Jo Cavanaugh; five grandchildren, Cody Cavanaugh, Crystal Wallace Stanford, Billy Cavanaugh, Chelsea Cavanaugh, Jennifer Cavanaugh Van Pelt and husband, Jayton; seven great grandchildren, Kimberly Elena Stanford, Tully Michael Stanford, Louden Stanford, McKenzie Stanford, Hagen Cavanaugh, Brayden Cavanaugh, Bryan Keith Van Pelt; one sister, Virginia Adian; one brother, Larry Adian and wife, Marie and numerous nieces and nephews, including Stan Adian, that came to live her and Jackie following his father's death.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Cavanaugh was preceded in death by one brother, Reuben Stanley Adian; one daughter, Kimberly Jan Cavanaugh; one son, Keith Cavanaugh and a nephew that she helped raise, Roy Lee Adian.
Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Stevens Funeral Home.
