Nina Joyce (Richardson) Childress

Nina J. Childress, age 78, of Coleman, died Tuesday, November 9, 2021, in San Angelo, Texas.

The family will host a visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2021, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Elm Street Church of Christ, 216 W. Elm Street, with Jerry Jordan officiating, and Bob Martin, pulpit minister at Elm Street Church of Christ, assisting. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

She was born Nina Joyce Richardson on January 16, 1943, in Coleman to Bernice Richardson. Nina grew up in Coleman until she moved to Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles in 1961. Nina then moved back to her childhood home in Coleman. She married the love of her life, Howard “Coach” Childress on April 22, 1962, in Brownwood, Texas.

Nina was a vital part of the Coleman community. She worked for the Central Texas Opportunity for 22 years. She served as a board director for the Coleman Chamber of Commerce for many years. Nina loved volunteering in this capacity. You could always count on Nina to volunteer for the Coleman PRCA Rodeo, Fiesta de Paloma, Coleman Christmas Parade, or just answering the phone when needed. She also served on the Child Development Board and was a member of the Good Neighbors Club. Together, Nina and “Coach” helped in many capacities to build the community to what it is today. Her kindness and love for others will never be forgotten. Nina was a member of the Elm Street Church of Christ where she worshipped for many years.

Nina is preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Richardson Dawson, and her husband, Howard “Coach” Childress.

She is survived by her sons, Reggie Childress and wife Naomi of Tomball, and Michael Childress and wife Delma of San Angelo; four grandchildren, Michael Anthony Childress, Marcel Childress, Matthew Childress, and Alyssa Nicole Childress; one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Childress; and her extended family, Oretha Jordan of Abilene.

Memorials are suggested in memory of Nina to the Coach Childress Scholarship Fund at the Coleman Community Foundation, C/O CFA, P.O Box 1001, Abilene, Texas 79604.
