Robert L. Griffis, 82, of Coleman, died Sunday, September 29, 2019 at Coleman Healthcare Center. There will be a visitation for friends and family from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2109 at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman. A private committal service will be held at a later date. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Robert Lester Griffis was born September 23, 1937 in Coleman to Theo Griffis and Hazel West Griffis. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1956. He then attended the University of Texas in Austin, graduating in 1961 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Radio/Television and Journalism.
Mr. Griffis served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany. After being discharged from the Army, he came back to Coleman and owned KSTA Radio in Coleman and also started KTIE Radio in Abilene. He also owned the Tradewinds Restaurant and Concho Food Mart. He served as a board member and later was president of the Coleman County Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture and Tourist Bureau, served on the Board of Directors of the Retail Merchants in Coleman, was the Promotional Chairman for Coleman County, was on the State Board of Disaster Control, Building Fund Campaign Publicity Director for the Coleman County Medical Center and was chairman of Bond Sales for the building of Lake Coleman. He was also a member of the Rotarians, Evening Lions Club, Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and taught Sunday School and Radio Bible Class for 19 years.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Mary Griffis of Coleman; two great nieces, Sujo McKee of Midland, Ricka McKee of Abilene and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mark Griffis; one sister, Adelia Griffis and one niece, Connie Griffis Whitney.
