Robert Mercer, age 74, of Valera, died Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at Coleman County Medical Center. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 2, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 3, at the Valera Baptist Church with James Maedgen, Robert’s cousin, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Valera Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman.
Robert Mercer was born April 21, 1945 in San Pedro, California, a son of Myrtle Olivia Armstrong Mercer and the late Creath Lewis “Red” Mercer. His grandparents were Bud and Izora Mercer and he spent many happy summers with them in Valera, Texas, although he grew up in Odessa where he graduated from Permian High School in 1963. Immediately following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Coral Sea. Robert served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He made a career in the Navy and retired in 1983 as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his retirement, he moved to his home in Valera where he lived most of the time until his death. He lived in Abilene from 1987-1992 but always had his home in Valera. He was an electronics technician for Abilene Aerospace as well as working in Bangs, Ballinger and Winters.
He is survived by his son, Charles Andrew Mercer and wife Tam of Houston; his daughter, Stephanie Anne Anderson and husband Bryan of Pace, Florida; his mother, Myrtle Mercer of Frisco; nine grandchildren, Nicholas Mercer, Pierce Mercer, Elizabeth Mercer, Catherine Mercer, Alexander Mercer, Savannah Dines, Brooke Underwood, Katy Anderson, Brady Anderson; one brother, Danny Mercer of Valera; two sisters, Verna Glynn of Frisco and Brenda Virgin of Odessa; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his faithful companion, Prissy.
