Roy Deane Young of the Young Ranch on the Pecan Bayou passed from this earthly life on Friday, May 12, 2017. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, with Mr. David Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the Burkett Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Roy Deane Young was born September 26, 1928 to Andrew and Margaret Young. He passed away on the ranch within a quarter mile of where he was born, doing what he loved most, tending his cattle. Roy was a fourth generation rancher, on the Young Ranch, which was established by his great-grandparents in 1876.
Roy loved his Lord, his family, his friends, his cattle and the land. Roy married Lela Christine Porter on July 12, 1947 and the family had planned a 70th Wedding Anniversary celebration this July.
Roy was a long-time member and president of the Coleman County Special Utility District. He served on this board for 28 years and was passionate about bringing quality water to the rural communities. Roy served on the Burkett School Board during the consolidation process with Coleman and Cross Plains. He was a member of the Coleman Rodeo Association and past director on the Central Colorado River Authority. Roy was a member of the Burkett Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Lela Young of the Ranch; children, Margie Sowell of Cross Plains, Connie Benfield and husband, Bruce, of Austin, Royce Young of the Ranch and Andrew Young and wife, Elizabeth, of Coleman. Also surviving are his grandchildren, who were special in his life, Deane Young, Alana Young and Andrea Young, all of Coleman; his brothers, Andy D. Young and wife, Barbara, of Coleman and Boyd Young and wife, Liz, of Abilene; brother-in-law, Jim Porter and wife, Lyn, of Argyle; sister-in-law, Glenda Brown of Amarillo, nieces and nephews and special friends, Darrel and Dee Ann Knight.
Roy was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Young and son-in-law, Kenneth Sowell.
Roy leaves a lasting legacy of love and stewardship to his family and friends. Memorials may be made to Burkett-Adams Cemetery Association or the charity of your choice.
Pallbearers will be Art Mattingly, Bob Edington, Ken Welch, Jim McAnally, Scott Ogden and Rob Cheaney. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mike Edington, Nicky Knox, Ross Jones, Bill Sneed, Raymond Cupps, Kenneth Thate, Wayne Webb, Jerald Wilson, Tommy Sloan and all of his friends and neighbors.
There will be a visitation Sunday, May 14, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.
