Truman Matthews

July 29, 1932 — September 27, 2024

Burkett

Truman Matthews, a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away at his residence near Burkett, Texas, on September 27, 2024, with his family by his side. Born on July 29, 1932, in Brown County, Texas, Truman grew up in Liberty, Cleveland, and Santa Anna, where he attended school and laid the foundation for a life dedicated to hard work and service.

Truman enjoyed a fruitful career, having spent many years in the drywall business alongside a significant tenure as a mail carrier. His determination and work ethic were evident in all that he accomplished. In addition to his professional life, he proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge on August 17, 1953. This experience underscored his commitment to his country and contributed to the values he instilled in his family.

On July 21, 1962, Truman married Bessie Darline Erwin in Fort Worth, Texas. Their union was a partnership that flourished over the years, marked by love and mutual respect, lasting for 62 wonderful years. Together, they raised three sons: Roger Matthews and his wife Angie of San Angelo, Dwight Matthews and his wife Bobbie of Burkett, and Tim Matthews and his wife Margret of Burkett. Truman took immense pride in his family, especially in his role as a grandfather, leaving a loving legacy through his eight grandchildren: Kristen Hale and her husband Bob, Truman Ryan Matthews and his wife Joshlyn, Ashley O'Quin and her husband Eric, Lauren Keith, Katherine Crosser and her husband Nathan, Allison Hernandez and her husband Abisai, Skyla Hough and her husband Brenden, and Emily Matthews. His heart was further filled with joy from the love of his 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his family, Truman enjoyed farming, a passion that connected him to the land, and he was known for his skills in building and fixing just about anything, which spoke to his resourcefulness and ingenuity. He had a tender heart, particularly for his grandchildren, whom he delighted in spoiling.

Truman is preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Ethel Matthews, and was the last surviving member of his siblings, which included Myrtle, Mirtie, Roger, Jeanette, Marie, Mavis, Dwane, Shirley, Billie Ruth, Margaret, and Evelyn. He will be fondly remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the warmth he brought to his family and friends.

The family will host a visitation at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Vaughan and Rev. Jeremy Howard officiating. Interment will follow in the Burkett Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.

Truman Matthews’s legacy lives on through the love and memories he created, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
