Ulys A. Beard

Ulys Beard, age 91, former Silver Valley resident, died Thursday, June 12, 2014, in Abilene. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 16, in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Silver Valley Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Ulys Beard was born August 23, 1922, in Hickman County, Tennessee, a son of Arthur Joshua Beard and Bessie Mae Warf Beard. He grew up and attended school in Hickman and Williamson Counties in Tennessee. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

On December 25, 1944, he married Melissa Irene Story in Fairview, Tennessee. He was a farmer and worked for Union Carbide in Tennessee. In 1967 he and Irene moved to Silver Valley, Coleman County, Texas. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2008. On May 3, 2008 he married Lavada Poindexter in Clyde and resided there. He was Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Lavada Beard of Clyde; seven children, Shirley and Weldon Champion of Abilene, Gaile and Bo Green of North Richland Hills, Don and Kim Beard of Clyde, Olan and Debbie Beard of Abilene, Johnny and Myra Beard of Dickson, Tennessee, Bobby and Rhonda Beard of Clyde, Annette and Randy Mabry of Sonora; two daughters-in-law, Teresa Beard of Clyde and Judy Beard of Keller; one son-in-law, Harley Sadler of Ovalo; 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; five step-children, numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Billy Beard and Jimmy Beard and one daughter, Janice Sadler; two sisters and three brothers; grandson James Dean Beard.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan, Coleman, Texas.
