Vernon Roberts, age 83, of Coleman County, died on Monday, September 9, 2019, at his home. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 10, from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, Coleman. Graveside funeral service will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at the Glen Cove Cemetery Pavilion with Sam Wilson officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Glen Cove Cemetery.
Vernon Roberts was born on May 19, 1936 in Coleman, Texas, a son of Joe and Ruby Snow Roberts. He grew up in Coleman where he attended school and then graduated from Centennial High School, Class of 1955. Immediately following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, and honorably served his country for three years. During his military service he was stationed in Iceland for one year. In December 1955 he married Dorothy Jean Morgan in Coleman at the Elm Street Church of Christ and they have celebrated over 63 years of marriage.
Vernon worked for Safeway as a market manager for a number of years in Abilene, Big Spring, San Angelo, Brady and Ballinger. He retired from Safeway and then went to work for the Department of Transportation in Coleman. He worked for many years there and retired from there. In addition, he ran cattle on his place near Hords Creek Lake until July of 2018, when heat and drought caused him to make the decision to sell his cattle. He had been raising cattle all his life until the age of 82. He enjoyed working and staying busy all the time. He liked to go deer hunting and fishing. He was proud to be half Cherokee.
He was a long-time member of Hillcrest Church of Christ. Vernon was a good husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Roberts, of the home; two sons, Jeff Roberts and wife Wanda of Coleman, Bruce Roberts and wife Rhonda of Lake Brownwood; three grandchildren, Morgan Roberts of Buffalo Gap, Emily Roberts of Wichita Falls, Jerod Roberts of Coleman; a local nephew, Mike Bowers and wife Mary Ann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and a son, Bradley Roberts, in 1993.
