Willie Matthews, 89, of Coleman, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 West Pecan Street, Coleman, with Rev. Randell Casey officiating, assisted by Rev. John Stanislaw. Burial will be in the Coleman City Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
He was born Willie Lewis Matthews on September 29, 1927 in Coleman County to Joe Matthews and Vivian Cohea Matthews. He grew up in Leaday, where he attended school and graduated from Mozelle High School. He honorably served in the United States Army. On July 24, 1953, Willie married Irene Slayton in Artesia, New Mexico.
Willie worked for Phillips 66 in the oil field and on the pipeline as a “powder monkey”. Willie also worked in construction and worked for the County of Coleman doing road maintenance. He is a former member of Leaday Baptist Church.
Willie is survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, two brothers and one sister.
There will be a visitation on Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
