Winston Bourland Elkins

August 31, 1921 — February 22, 2014

Winston B. Elkins, 92, of St. David, Arizona and former Coleman resident, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 22, 2014 at Hacienda de Monte Vista Care facility in Tucson, Arizona. He was born August 31, 1921 in Coleman, to John m. and Maggie (Alexander) Elkins. As a young boy, he worked on several neighboring farms and ranches, and continued doing so until April of 1941, when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the south Pacific during World War II. While in the service, he met and later married Evelyn Bickmore of Chino, California. After being discharged in 1945, he moved his family to Bisbee, Arizona, were he worked in the copper mines for many years. In 1966, the moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked for the State Mine Inspectors office as a deputy mine inspector. Twenty-one years later, after their four children were grown, and they both retired, they moved back to Coleman, where they resided until the passing of his beloved wife of 65 years. He then moved back to Arizona where he lived with his oldest daughter, Margaret Meisterhans.

Winston was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herman, Wilbur and Thelbert of Coleman, Buren of Odessa; wife, Evelyn; son, Clifford Elkins of Phoenix and son-in-law, Fred Meisterhans of St. David, Arizona.

He is survived by his brother, Sam Elkins of Tucson, Arizona; sister-in-law, Ruth Elkins of Abilene; son, Danny Elkins and wife, Sandra, of Prescott Valley, Arizona; daughters, Margaret Meisterhans of St. David, Arizona, Pamela Gregory and husband, Jack, of Mayer, Arizona. He is also survived by three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren plus another one on the way, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion, 1600 East 9th Street, Coleman. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
